Release Date: October, 2007
Improvements (5.4)
- PureMessage now uses certificate validation to verify the authenticity of installations,
upgrades, and all subsequent software and data updates. This offers assurance that the content
you are downloading is from the Sophos website, not from a spoofed location. If you are
upgrading to version 5.4 from a previous version of PureMessage, you must retrieve the latest version of the
PureMessage upgrade program
(pmx-setup) when prompted. Otherwise, certificate validation will not take
effect. See “Installing PureMessage for UNIX 5.4”
and “Upgrading to PureMessage 5.4” for more
information.
-
You can now use the Groups Web Interface to search the mail and message logs for records of
past messages. To take advantage of this functionality, the Log Search Index service must be
enabled, and you must have selected the Postfix mail transfer agent during PureMessage installation. In addition, ensure that the
awk and mkfifo UNIX utilities are installed on your
system.
On fresh installations that use Postfix, the Log Search Index service is enabled by default.
However, if you upgraded to version 5.4 from a previous version of PureMessage, you must enable the service manually (see
“Managing the Log Search Index Service” in the Manager Reference for
specific instructions).
When using the log search option, you select a reason (for example, "Virus") from the
Reason drop-down list. Although this list contains several default
reasons, you can customize this list as described in “Adding and Deleting Custom Log Search
Reasons” in the Administrative Groups section of the Administrator's
Reference.
- An additional message log key, “pmx_action”, makes it easier to track down information
for messages that are addressed to multiple recipients or that contain addresses included in
PureMessage administrative groups. This portion of a
message log entry begins with “pmx_action=”. See “Message Log Syntax” in the Logs and
Reports section of the Administrator's Reference for details of the data contained
in each pmx_action entry.
- The default policy in version 5.4 differs from the policy shipped with previous versions of
PureMessage. However, if you are upgrading to 5.4 from
a previous version of PureMessage, your existing policy
is preserved. To view the contents of the modified policy, see “Default PureMessage Policy
Script” in the Policy Configuration section of the Administrator's Reference.

Resolved Issues (5.4)
- Sometimes, during rotation of the PostgreSQL database log file
(/opt/pmx/etc/pg_log), the database would shut down and not restart. This
occurred when the database took longer than one minute to shut down. The database now stops
within the alloted time. (DEF13631)
